TOKAIDO is the historical manufacturer of
karategi
(kimono for karate). The Tokaido brand was founded in 1956 by Mr Shizuo Sugiura. He began making outfits for his friends who practiced
Karate
. Until then, karateka practiced their art in Judo gear(judogi), pyjamas, burlap or any other kind of clothing, but there was no “official” uniform for practicing Karate. At the time, he was close to the great masters of the time, who were a source of inspiration for him: thanks to their feedback on the outfits he used, Sugiura san never ceased to perfect the fabric and tailoring of his karategi for the practice of
kata
and
kumite
and
competitions
.

Tokaido is now recognized as supplying karate practitioners in Japan and around the world with the finest uniforms, belts and other karate products. The Tokaido brand has become the global standard against which other uniforms and belts are compared.
