Decried and banned for many years in France due to its virulence, this <strong>combat sport<\/strong> was reintroduced in 2020 under certain conditions. Since then, it has gone from strength to strength. How does a cage fight work? What criteria are used to determine the winner? What blows are prohibited? Find out in this article.      <br\/><\/p>\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Preparing for the confrontation in the cage<br\/><\/h2>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The day before the fight, <strong>opponents<\/strong> must weigh themselves on an official scale provided by the promoter. Representatives and officials are present. This act validates the category in which the <strong>boxers<\/strong> will compete.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They must also bring an up-to-date medical file, including a certificate of fitness for competition, an eye examination, a file listing all KOs undergone, and so on.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fighter or his representative must be present at the briefing presenting the rules of <strong>the confrontation<\/strong> and at least one hour before the start of the event.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The different weight categories<br\/><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are a total of 9 weight categories in <strong>MMA<\/strong>, validated by the majority of organizations and mentioned in the <strong>Mixed Martial Arts<\/strong> rules:<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>flyweight: less than 57kg (125lb)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bantamweight: under 61kg (135lb)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Featherweight: less than 66kg (145lb)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>lightweight: less than 70kg (155lb)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>welterweight: under 77kg (170lb)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Middleweight: less than 84kg (185lb)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Light Heavyweight: under 93kg (205lb)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Heavyweight: less than 120kg (265lb)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Super Heavyweight: no limit<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everything in order from an administrative point of view? A veritable cocktail of disciplines, this spectacular sport blends judo, Thai boxing and wrestling, to name but a few ingredients\u2026 But how do the fights unfold? Imagine two opponents face to face in an <strong>octagonal cage<\/strong>, ready to do battle. Fists, feet, knees: all blows are allowed\u2026 or almost.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This breathless face-off ends in a resounding <strong>knockout<\/strong>, a tactical submission or, if the fighters hold out to the end, a decision by the referees.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns has-button-primary-background-color has-background is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-content-background-color-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-53dd2ed11532a63dda4c964ea50c36a4 wp-block-paragraph\">An MMA match lasts 3 rounds of 5 minutes, with a 1-minute break between each round (except for champion titles, where the fight can last 5 rounds of 5 minutes).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Opponents meet in an octagon-shaped ring (called a \u201ccage\u201d). Each is assigned a blue or red corner. Only the two <strong>opponents<\/strong> and the referee are allowed to enter the cage in the middle of a fight! However, during interludes, <em>cornermen<\/em> and first-aiders are of course allowed access.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Outside the cage are the judges,<strong> UFC<\/strong> officials and commentators. Behind them, the spectators support their favorite, while the \u201cOctagon Girls\u201d signal to the public the round in progress. <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How do you keep score in MMA?<br\/><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the end of each round, the<strong> judges<\/strong> award 10 points each to the fighter they consider most deserving and fewer to his <strong>opponent<\/strong> (generally 9 or 8 points). Penalty points are also awarded for non-compliance with the rules. <br\/><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Note that in the case of a <strong>KO victory<\/strong>, the judges\u2019 score is not used. If both fight to the end of round 3, it\u2019s up to the judges to decide. <br\/><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Scoring is based on various criteria, such as the amount of damage inflicted on the opponent, bringing him to the ground, aggressiveness, duration of an attacking stance (a defensive stance that lasts too long will be at a disadvantage)\u2026<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Possible outcomes<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Winning a fight by knockout<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the participants loses consciousness as a result of the blows received. He is obviously no longer able to defend or attack. Victory goes to his opponent.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The TKO (technical knockout)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The decision to stop the fight is taken by the fighter\u2019s doctor, referee or team. Intense pain, major cut to a part of the body\u2026 The fighter is considered no longer able to fight, even if he is still conscious or persists in wanting to continue. It is also possible for the corner men to stop the fight if they feel there is too great a difference in level between the opponents, in order to avoid unstoppable repeated blows.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Victory by submission \/ immobilization<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The boxer gives up by tapping his opponent 3 times with the flat of his hand. This warns the referee, who puts an end to the fight. Often, this gesture is made when one of the participants is no longer able to withstand a lock or choke.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The technical bid<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In this case, it\u2019s the referee who takes the decision to end the fight if he feels that one of the opponents cannot escape from a lock or choke.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Technical Decision by the judges<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The jury puts an end to the fight if one of the two participants is unintentionally injured and requires treatment. It took several years for this discipline to take on the form we know today. Before that, <strong>MMA rules<\/strong> were a tricky subject to tackle\u2026 since they hardly existed at all!  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This means that not everything is fair game. The organizations in each country define their own rules, even if they are logically intertwined. <br\/><\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Prohibited strikes in MMA (Belgium \u2013 France)<br\/><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While many blows are permitted, including kicks, fists, knees and ground strikes, others are prohibited out of respect and safety:<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Headbutting<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pressure on the eye<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bite your opponent<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Spitting on your opponent<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hook the other fighter\u2019s cheek<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hair pulling<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Percussion via vertical downward trajectory on the head (in France, all elbow strikes are prohibited)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Strikes to the spine \/ neck \/ back of the head<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Aim for the throat<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Aim for the private parts<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Crush your opponent if he\u2019s on the ground<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Finger-twisting<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Scratching \/ pinching<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Grab your opponent\u2019s equipment<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of course, the <strong>fighter<\/strong> must also respect the referee\u2019s instructions, the duration of the fight and adopt a sporting attitude.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is the minimum age required to practice MMA in competition?<br\/><\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are amateur <strong>competitions<\/strong> from the age of 12, where those who love the discipline can develop their skills, while being supervised in terms of safety.
