Olympic Games and martial arts: a great love story<\/h2>\n\n

Karate on the podium!<\/h3>\n\n

It was a long-awaited event for martial arts enthusiasts: Karate<\/strong> was included in the official program of the Olympic Games<\/strong> for the first time in its history. A stunning entry into the big leagues after several unsuccessful attempts. For what reason(s)? Mystery… In any case, the “Way of the Empty Hand” is all the more deserving of its title, since it advocates values similar to those of Olympism<\/strong>, such as respect for one’s opponent, self-control and rigour.<\/p>\n\n

A short-lived joy, as it has already been announced that karate will be dropped from the next edition, in favor of breakdance.<\/p>\n\n

On the program: kumite and kata. These two events will respectively feature promising battles and fascinating movement sequences.<\/p>

Dates: August 06 to 08, 2021<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n

Unfortunately, our Belgian compatriots will not be representing our beautiful country at this event… However, many athletes from the 4 corners of the world sponsored by Adidas Combat Sports<\/a> will be present. In all, no fewer than 80 athletes (60 in kumite and 20 in kata) will be vying for the gold medal.<\/p>\n\n

Judokas grapple with other fighters<\/h3>\n\n

Judo made its Olympic debut in 1964<\/strong>, but it wasn’t until 1992<\/strong> that women officially took to the mat<\/a>. The competition was divided into seven weight categories.<\/p>\n\n

New this year! A mixed team event<\/strong> awaits us. At least 12 groups will take part after the individual events. A fine example of unity that will certainly strengthen ties. Will there be strength in numbers? At least, that’s what we hope for the Belgian team. With 12 medals to their credit<\/strong>, the black-yellow-red team is not about to stop there…<\/p>\n\n

Program: individual and mixed team events (6 individual bouts per round)<\/p>

Dates: July 25 to 31, near Palais Imp\u00e9rial de Tokyo<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n

Taekwondo: between power, precision and control<\/h3>\n\n

Taekwondo<\/strong> has been an Olympic sport since 2000<\/strong>. In all, some sixty delegations took part in the Olympic Games in this discipline. The fights are often quite spectacular and feature a variety of styles. The objective? Score the most points over 3 rounds.<\/p>\n\n

European champion in 2019, Jaouad Achab<\/strong> will defend our colors in the -68kg category.<\/p>\n\n

Program: 8 events (4 for women and 4 for men)<\/p>

Dates: July 25 to 28<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n

Olympic Games and combat sports: time to step into the ring<\/h2>\n\n

Right hook with English boxing<\/h3>\n\n

A much-loved discipline, boxing<\/strong> was known as “pugilism”<\/em> at the ancient Olympic Games. It made its debut in the modern edition of 1904<\/strong>. Today, the sport is open to both men and women, and is organized around knockout matches. The 2021 edition counts 286 participants<\/strong>. A special feature: medals are awarded to the top four boxers in each category.<\/p>\n\n

This year, no boxer will represent Belgium at the Olympic Games.<\/p>\n\n

On the programme: 13 events, including 2 new women’s weight categories<\/p>

Dates: next rounds from July 24 to August 08<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n

Fighting your opponent and yourself<\/h3>\n\n

“It’s in the old pots that the best soups are made”.<\/em><\/p>\n\n

Wrestling is one of the oldest disciplines in the Olympic<\/strong> Games! For a very long time, it was the central element of this competition. There are two types: Greco-Roman wrestling (first introduced in 1896) and freestyle wrestling (1904). The first category limits holds to the upper part of the body. As for the second, the grips can be applied to any part of the body.<\/p>\n\n

Program: 18 events<\/p>

Dates: at the Makuhari Messe in Chiba, from August 1st to 07th<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n

Fencing: on guard!<\/h3>\n\n

The last combat sport to be highlighted at the 2020 Olympic Games: fencing. Noblesse, honor, tradition, respect… The history and values of this discipline<\/strong> are the same as those of the Olympic Games. It has been running since 1896 and features both individual and group events.<\/p>\n\n

The 2020 edition will be the first to feature all twelve events in the fencing program<\/strong>. Epee, sabre and foil will be on hand!<\/p>\n\n

On the program: at least one medal event per day<\/p>

Dates: July 24 to August 1, 2021<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n
